The Radiological Impact and Performance Assessments expert group (IPA) is divided into two research units that investigate the behaviour of radionuclides in the geosphere and biosphere to assess the impact on man and environment:
Biosphere Impact Studies
The Biosphere Impact Studies research unit investigates the behaviour of radionuclides in the terrestrial environment and develops models to predict radionuclide behaviour.
The effect of ionising radiation on non-human biota is also studied. The impact of ionising radiation and radioactive substances on man and environment is evaluated.
The Performance Assessments unit is involved in the evaluation and demonstration of the long-term safety of radioactive waste disposal facilities. This includes modelling of radionuclide release from a multi-barrier near-surface or deep disposal facility to the geosphere and biosphere.
